THERE'S A RAINBOW ON THE FLOOR

Just 100km southeast of Cusco is one of Peru’s newest hot spots for hiking. The land appears to be a rainbow laid out on the floor below you. The weathering and mineralogy of Ausangate Mountain has created an unrivalled visual feast. Easily reached as an overnight trip from Cusco, there is an option to camp, but with the altitude and coolness, we choose to stay in the warmth and comfort of the lodge.

Itinerary

Met and transferred to your hotel upon arrival.

Morning sightseeing tour exploring the modern
districts of Lima and its historic centre, declared
a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.
Proceed to Santo Domingo Monastery boasting
fine carved choir stalls, the oldest of Lima. It
was here that San Marcos University, the first
in South America, was founded in 1551. You’ll
then visit the acclaimed Larco museum, and go
on a journey into the legacy of pre-Inca cultures
and the context in which they developed. The
museum offers a detailed look at 3,000 years of
Peruvian pre-Columbian history. Its masterpieces
are considered worldwide icons of pre-
Columbian art and have been displayed in the
world’s most renowned museums.

Morning transfer to the airport for your flight to
Cusco, where you will be met and transferred to
your hotel to rest and slowly acclimatise.
Afternoon city tour includes the beautiful
Koricancha or Sun Temple, the Cathedral as
well as the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman, a most
remarkable Inca building, the amphitheater
of Kenko. This is followed by a visit to Puca
Pucara, a strategically located ‘red fortress’ that
dominates the entire.

Guided tour to Pisac in the Sacred Valley. Explore
the fascinating market, originally a place where
people from remote communities used to barter
their products, now one of South America’s most
famous souvenir markets. Make sure to sample
some ’empanadas’ baked in traditional clay
ovens before you tackle the ruins above.
Set high above the valley by patterned fields
and rimmed by vast terracing, the stonework
and panoramas at Pisaq’s Inca citadel are
magnificent. In the main ruins, you will find
temples of the sun, moon, rain, rainbow, and
stars, as well as a few Inca crosses rising from
the ground. Return to Cusco for a briefing for
your upcoming trek.

Early departure for your Inca Trail trek. Widely
regarded as the best part of the many fantastic
trails; today’s hike take you through the
picturesque scenery and impeccably maintained
ancient archaeology of the Inca trails. Starting at
the ancient Inca ruins of Chachabamba (2,150
m), your route takes you along misty cloudforest
paths, moss covered stairs and numerous
mountain lookout points, before arriving at the
well preserved, imposing ancient compound
at Winay Wayna; known for its ingenious steep
agricultural terracing and earthquake-proof
design. Take time to absorb the the mesmerising
views and historic atmosphere, before continuing
on past a chain of ritual baths and other smaller
structures until reaching Inti Punku, more
commonly known as the ‘Sun Gate’, and your
first glimpse of the magnificent Machu Picchu.
The Sun Gate is a pilgrimage site for travellers
and tourists alike. Before dark, a secondary
trail will take you down to the village of Aguas
Calientes in the valley below, for an evening
of rest, or possibly spent in one of the nearby
thermal Baths.
Distance: 8km. Walking time: 6 to 7 Hours
Max. altitude: 2700m

A very early start this morning to catch the first
bus back to Machu Picchu and enjoying the
best, uninterrupted views of the early-morning
sun rising above the main complex without the
crowds. Your private guide will then be on hand
for a two-hour walking tour. This gives you an
excellent introduction to the history, its purpose,
and the significance Machu Picchu holds in
Peruvian history more widely.
You will have time to take the precarious climb
to the summit of Huayna Pichu, the sister site to
the main complex. (must be booked in advance).
When ready you will take the bus back down to
Aguas Calientes, and train to Ollantaytambo,
where you will be met and transferred to your
hotel in the Sacred Valley
Walking time: 2 to 3 Hours
Starting altitude: 2,000m Max. altitude: 2400m

Visit one of the remote communities in The
Sacred Valley. About 200 families live in the
Quechua-speaking village of Patacancha. Adobe
houses with thatched rooves are scattered
throughout the hillsides. Women proudly
maintain their century-old weaving techniques
and a rich tradition of iconography. The complex
patterns in their minds are passed down from
generation to generation. Your visit helps the
preservation of this cultural legacy and important
part identity in the Andes

Today, hike from Moray to the salt terraces
of Maras into the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
Moaray’s circular terraces hidden among the
hills are similar to that of a Greek amphitheatre.
Surrounded by an impressive backdrop of snow
covered mountains, Moray served as an open-air
agricultural lab for adapting crops to different
environmental conditions. Continue on to the salt
mines of Maras, where salt has been extracted
since Inca times with the same methods still
being used.
Walking time: approx. 5 hours
Altitude difference: 600m

Visit the charming community of Chinchero and
its Sunday market that traces back to the Inca
time when barter or ‘trueque’ existed. Its a real
hub of activity, vibrant with colour and movement.

Morning pick up and driven by your guide
through the fertile Vilcanota Valley to the town
of Cusipata. Pass through the community of
Quisacancha with grazing llamas and alpacas.
Your walk gives you a privileged view of the Inca
Snowcapped Mountain (Nevado del Inca). On
our way to the fourth Andean Lodge you might
see hundreds of Andean geese nesting in the
cliffs of Anta, and the flatiron formations of Apu
Labrayani near Huampococha Tambo where you
will spend the night.

Watch the sun’s first rays appear before starting
the most spectacular hike between mountains
of a myriad of colours, with red, ochre, and
blue strata all shining forth. Admire the unique
beauty of Rainbow Mountain, before descending
through the valley that leads to Japura. On the
way you will have time for a farewell lunch before
heading back to Cusco

Day at leisure.

Transfer to the airport/station for onward travel.
