Five expedition cruises that will change the way you travel
We are travellers… and when travellers cruise, they avoid the big ships and go for expedition cruises. Curious? You should be! Once you catch the expedition cruise bug, you won’t look back.
Expedition cruising gives you experiences that in many cases just wouldn’t be possible any other way. They take you to some of the most remote places in the world to discover untouched landscapes, wildlife havens and history that will blow your mind.

Christmas in Antarctica
What could be more magical than celebrating the festive season with a local colony of penguins in one of the most phenomenal destinations on earth? This cruise departs from Stanley in the Falkland Islands, just a short flight from Santiago, Chile.
The journey south to Antarctica takes in a number of classic locations such as Petermann Island and the iceberg ‘graveyard’ at Pleneau Island.
You can glide through the sublime Lemaire Channel and make continental landings at Paradise Harbour or nearby Neko Harbour.
Included in the trip are seven days of off-ship exploration along the Antarctic Peninsula.
Each day you will explore on shore by foot, observing wildlife colonies, visiting historic huts and science bases, photographing icebergs and soaking up the incredible landscapes. This is a Christmas that would be hard to top!
South Georgia, Falkland Islands and Antarctica
South Georgia is a destination that only a lucky few visit each year. It is a breathtaking wildlife sanctuary, just 170km and half-covered in glaciers.
The history of South Georgia is as fascinating as the beaches are filled with fur seals. It is the resting place of the polar explorer, Sir Ernest Shackleton, and home to hundreds of thousands of penguins, sea birds and nesting birds.
Venturing south to Antarctica to finish the journey, you will find icebergs, wildlife and more wildlife.
Your days are spent on-shore in the company of naturalists, marine biologists, ornithologists, adventurers and your resident photography professional.
For the adventurers, there are plenty of opportunities to explore on long hikes ashore, or by sea kayak. This is the cruise for the travellers who ‘want to see it all!’
Chilean Fjords Adventure
Patagonia is a great bucket list destination… the wild and remote southern corner of South America is one of the most beautiful places you will ever see with stunning views at every turn!
“I thought I had seen Patagonia… but sailing through those fjords was like going through another world. The views are jaw dropping… even for a well-seasoned traveller. We sailed into bays that no one goes to because they are inaccessible by land. This experience really showed me that there are still parts of the world that are untouched.”
This cruise starts in Ushuaia and includes a mix of Pacific Ocean cruising and Zodiac boat exploration with onshore hikes and discovery experiences.
There are glaciers to discover, wildlife and birdlife to observe and visits to small coastal communities to immerse yourself in the way of life of the local people.
It really is the most remote, pristine location outside of the Polar regions.
Scotland, Faroe Islands and Iceland
If you are looking for a truly unique experience, you’ve found it here.
Think dramatic coastlines, quaint seaside towns, puffin colonies, ice-covered volcanoes, geothermal lagoons and some of the most remote islands in the world…
Our Director, Rose, joined this cruise in June 2019… and she hasn’t stopped talking about it since!
“Wherever I travel, I’m all in for whatever nature and wildlife the destination has to offer… and this trip seriously did not disappoint. The beauty of travelling to these remote locations was that often our only company was the local sheep and cows, happily grazing amongst the ruins. We cruised through lava tunnels, getting a history and geography lesson on the way… if only this was how kids were taught these lessons at school!”
When you board this cruise in Scotland, nothing will prepare you for the amazing experiences that await.
One Ocean has created a voyage that superbly links these three gems of the North Atlantic. And the beauty of the daily exploration is that no two travellers will have the same experience on the same cruise. Your shore visits will be tailored to your interests… travel doesn’t get much better than that.
Explore the top of the world in Spitsbergen
Polar bears outnumber people in Spitsbergen, the northernmost inhabited place on the planet.
This cruise to Spitsbergen and the Svalbard archipelago offers incredible wildlife and birding experiences… and, of course, polar bears!
The expedition cruise ship is built for travelling in these conditions allowing you to venture right to the edge of the Arctic pack ice at around80 degrees north latitude. Few other vessels can give you this amazing experience.
You can spend your days exploring onshore, hiking to historic places and thriving wildlife colonies. The regular Zodiac excursions will leave you in awe of the stunning Arctic landscape.
The Northwest Passage
Follow in the footsteps of the early Arctic explorers such as Franklin, Amundsen and Larsen, exploring the archipelago of islands and channels that create Canada’s high Arctic region. This is the home of the polar bear, muskox, caribou and walrus… if you want to see wildlife, this is the cruise for you.
You will cruise past the colourful villages and vast icefields of Greenland, the stunning fjords of the Baffin Island coastline along Canada’s remote and historic Northwest Passage.
You will sail into deep fjords and past enormous icebergs, learning about the rich culture and people in the region as you stop along the way.
This is an amazing wildlife discovery adventure, with history and exploration at its core.
