Itinerary

Met upon arrival at Colombo Airport and transferred to your hotel at nearby Negombo.

After breakfast we set off into the heart of Sri Lanka to Sigiriya, a fortress complex of a ruined palace and a World Heritage site. Undoubtedly the most treasured historical monument in Sri Lanka and the most visited.

This evening you’ll be able to climb it.(B)

Morning bike ride through small villages around Giritale to Dambalawewa Lake. You should see plenty of birds, including egrets, kites, kingfishers.

Its alss a great chance to mix and mingle with locals and then try a traditional lunch. Then visit Polonnaruwa, a sprawling 12th Century architectural site with two magnificent UNESCO World Heritage listings. This ancient city is a delight to wander through, with immense Buddha statues carved from the rock. (B,L)

Morning drive to the Knuckles Mountain Range, a climatic microcosm of Sri Lanka.

The 3 hr trek takes you along streams and past waterfalls with crystal clear water. The quiet path was once used to connect villages but is now very quiet and excellent for seeing breathtaking fauna and exploring its very unique bio diversity. (B)

A 3hr drive to Kandy, the charming hill capital and the cultural centre of Sri Lanka, and another UNESCO heritage city.

After visiting the Temple of the Tooth, you’ll to the upper lake viewpoint over the city and have a walking tour around the main city area and lake before checking in to your hotel.

This afternoon is at leisure to enjoy as you please.

Ride the morning train on a journey that will rattle you straight into the heart of the tea country where pure Ceylon Tea is grown.

Enjoy your surroundings as your train will journey through dense vegetation, narrow tunnels while cutting through mountains hissing its way to a picture-perfect serenity among the lush green mountains.

You’ll be taken to Nuwara Eliya for a walk through a tea plantation and of course, have a cuppa.(B)

An early 90min drive Horton Plains for your 4hr trek to World’s End, a protected windy plateau at the elevation of 2100m, with beautiful grassland and cloud forests. It is rich in biodiversity and many species found here are endemic to the region. Return to your hotel after the walk.

This evening there is the option to climb Adam’s Peak. Dec-April only. See separate text box.

Visit Lipton Seat, yes, named after the famous tea planter, who stood here to survey his tea plantations.

The panoramic view, is considered as the most attractive in Sri Lanka. a short drive to Bandarawela where you’ll have a 2-3hr guided walk through a tea estate to see and understand the growing and manufacturing process as well as the lives of the locals.

Morning drive to the coast as you make your way to Yala National park, known for its high density of Leopards, and where the fortunate few are lucky enough to spot the sloth bear. (I’d prefer to see a leopard, just saying…).

Yala National Park is one of Sri Lanka‘s premier eco-tourism destinations and is among the oldest of Sri Lanka‘s National Parks. Here you will also see birds, reptiles, as well as monkeys crashing through the trees, peacocks in their finest frocks and elephants ambling about as you go along.

Visit the Sinharaja Forest Reserve and explore by foot on a 10km hike. This Biosphere Reserve and World Heritage Site was saved from mass logging by its inaccessibility.

The dense vegetation limits the wildlife viewing but keep an eye out for the fearless greater racket-tailed drongo and the noisy orange billed babbler (seriously!).

After the walk you’ll drive to little coastal hamlet of Ahangama, your home for the next few days.(B)

After breakfast take the local train to Galle for a truly authentic experience.

Then be guided through Galle, and the Fort on foot. Galle Fort was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument.

The fort stood strong against the Boxing Day tsunami which damaged much of the area around Galle. Return by vehicle to the hotel.(B)

The day is yours to enjoy as you wish. Enjoy the hotel, wander through the city, visit museums or spend time by the ocean. (B)

Start with an early Yoga session then head to Colombo after breakfast, with an option for a boat ride along the way.

This evening you’ll be taken to Diyatha Uyana, a park constructed on the banks of the Diyawanna Oya. There are a variety of restaurants available for you to have dinner (own expense).

After breakfast set off on a journey by foot through the busy streets in Colombo. Walk out from northeast where Colombo’s white-domed Old Town Hall and walk up to Gangarama Buddhist temple.

Finish your tour on the Galle Face Green where you can enjoy a drink at the famous hotel nearby, or stop by the markets for some bargains. This evening you’ll be transferred to the airport for your onward flight.
