CHRISTMAS IN ANTARCTICA, 17 – 28 DECEMBER 2017
Are you like Bing Crosby and dreaming of a White Christmas? This is your trip, the only place with a white Christmas in the middle of summer. Imagine standing on deck sipping eggnog as snowflakes gently fall, then feasting on Christmas dinner surrounded by soaring snow covered peaks in the most pristine landscape. Walk in a winter wonderland along beaches crowded with curious penguins, and glide sleigh like through rarely visited waterways as whales feed nearby.
MARINE MAMMALS, 22 MARCH 2018 – 02 APRIL 2018
Late season is bustling with activity so this trip is focused on understanding and interacting with the amazing whales, seals (and penguins) of Antarctica. This is when whales are their most relaxed and curious, so we have several world renowned marine mammal specialists aboard to educate us, and you can and even help with some of their research. This is also the perfect time for incredible Antarctic sunrises and sunsets. Ask Rose about it, as she checked it out in 2015.
Met upon arrival in Ushuaia. Transfer to the hotel for your included pre-cruise accomodation.
Awake this morning and cast your eyes to the pier where your ship is waiting for you. Explore town or perhaps stretch your legs in the nearby Tierra del Fuego National Park. Afternoon transfer to the ship.
The Drake Passage is home to thousands of seabirds including our favourite, the majestic wandering albatross. The expedition team will prepare you with presentations on everything Antarctic, from wildlife to history, and you
can pick up some tips from the on-board photography expert. Before long we start to see our first icebergs announcing our arrival in Antarctic waters.
In the calm waters of the Antarctic Peninsula, we explore the bays, harbours and coves in small, inflatable Zodiac boats, marvelling up close at nature’s brilliance. As we quietly glide along
the bays we are greeted by curious seals and whales, who often come close to check us out.
Venture ashore to encounter a wonderful array of experiences, walk along the shore and gasp at the staggering amount of equally curious penguins and be amused at the squabbling and waddling of these entertaining birds. We hope to step foot on the Antarctic Continent at either Neko Harbour or Paradise Harbour, and if the weather allows, we can camp on shore.
We head for South Shetland Islands and if weather conditions allow, we sail the ship into the flooded volcanic caldera at Deception Island. History surrounds us at the old whaling station and dilapidated wooden buildings.
As we make our way back to South America, the educational presentations continue and we enjoy an entertaining and memorable voyage recap by our Expedition Leader. Approaching the entrance to the Beagle Channel in early evening light, we enjoy a special dinner attended by the Captain.
In the early morning, we arrive into Ushuaia. It is time to say farewell to your crew and fellow travelers. Guests will be transported to their hotels or to the airport.
