Itinerary

Leaving Arica you’ll visit Azapa  Museum housing the Chinchorro Mummies,  the oldest artificially preserved bodies ever found in the world, older than the Egyptian mummies. Then head to Putre and the ruins of Copaquilla fortress. Take some time to acclimatise as its not only the scenery that will leave you breathless.

A day to explore the UN recognised Biosphere of Lauca NP, packed full of breathtaking altiplano scenery, with volcanoes, hot springs and glistening lakes and where the wildlife seems to be the only inhabitants. (BLD)

Drive through “Las Vicuñas” National Reserve and visit Guallatire village at the base of an active volcano.

Follow remote roads to Surire salt flat, home of three flamingo species and take time for a picnic. Take a warm dip in the Polloquere natural geothermal field, completely surrounded by nature. Overnight in and Andean lodge run by the Aymara family. (BLD)

Cross to Bolivia and visit the 2,000 sqkm salt flat of Coipasa, perhaps more beautiful, but less visited than Uyuni, where habitation dates back over 4,500 years.

Visit the church of Punta Arenas in the small village of Llica, before overnighting in the salt hotel at Tahua. (BLD)

An unforgettable drive through 12,000 km² of endless landscapes. Visit Isla Incahuasi famous for its flora and fauna, ancient civilisation and coral, dating from a time passed when Uyuni was underwater.

Cross Bahia Mala Mala and arrive to San Pedro de Quemez for overnight (D)

The landscape becomes even more incredible with multi-coloured deserts and lakes surrounded by salt flats and active volcanoes.

The entire area is a national reserve and home to vicuñas, viscachas, and flamingos. Arrive at Hotel de Piedra. (BLD).

Depart early to Laguna Colorada, hoping to meet local quinoa and amaranths growers. These Andean cereals are highly energetic and are used by the NASA for the cosmonauts during their space flights.

Visit Sol de Mañana hotsprings, with its volcanic fumes and boiling mud, creating a landscape from another world. See the Tree of stone and Laguna Verde then transfer to San Pedro.
