Itinerary

Met at the airport and transfer to hotel in nearby Negombo.

Drive to the Rock Fortress of Sigiriya, and if you’re feeling energetic, climb to the top. A 5C Royal Citadel, this unique Rock Fortress or “castle in the sky” is often considered to be the 8th Wonder of the modern world. (B)

Morning bike ride through small villages around Giritale to Dambalawewa Lake. A great chance to mix and mingle with locals and then join a family for a traditional lunch. Polonnaruwa is a huge architectural site with two magnificent UNESCO World Heritage listings. This ancient city is a delight to wander, or cycle through, with immense Buddha statues carved from the rock. (B)

Travel to Dambulla, to visit the cave temples, covered from floor to ceiling with extraordinarily well-preserved frescoes. We’ll visit a small garden where a specialist guides us through the many varied plants and explains their uses.

Then drive to Kandy for a visit to the Temple of the Tooth, the most important shrine in the country, which houses a relic of a tooth of Buddha taken from his funeral pyre in 543 BC. (B)

Meet Mrs Suzanne, owner of your home stay, and go with her by tuk tuk to the village market. Here you will learn about the fruit and vegetables and purchase ingredients to take back for your cooking experience, and enjoy your efforts for lunch.

This evening head to Peradeniya Botanical Garden and walk the paths through the giant palms and be enchanted by rare orchids, spices and herbs which are sometimes found nowhere else across the island through an abundance of flora. (B,L)

Head to the hills. The misty hill country is vastly renowned for unending acres of high-grown Ceylon Tea. Pass by the mountains and buy beautiful flowers from village children. It won’t cost much and you will help fund their schooling and study for their future.

Visit a Tea Factory. Be intrigued by the process, from plucking to processing and enjoy the finest Ceylon tea at the tea lounge. Take the train and travel through the tea plantations to Haputalé for dinner and overnight. (B,D)

Named after the famous tea planter, Lipton Seat has a panoramic view, and is possibly the most attractive viewpoint in Sri Lanka. On a clear day the view is out of this world.

Then proceed Udawalawe via Koslanda where you get to see the second tallest water fall in Sri Lanka“ Diyaluma Ella“. (B)

Morning game drive in Udawalawe National Park by private Jeep. The park is world famous for its elephants and many deer species, water buffalo and jackal.

After the safari proceed to Galle where you’ll be guided through the World Heritage Fort (spanning 90 acres), which was originally built by the Portuguese and later extended by the Dutch in 1663. Later this afternoon continue to Colombo.(B)

Explore the city’s temples and kovils by tuk tuk and then have the afternoon at leisure. Keep your hotel room till late in the day so you can freshen up before your late evening transfer to the airport for your onward flight.
