The colonial jewel of southern Ecuador, Cuenca is also the cultural centre of Ecuador. A maze of picturesque plazas, narrow cobblestone streets, white washed buildings, and 52 impressive churches (one for each Sunday) can make you think that time has stood still. It’s also home to the Panama hat, and there are plenty of places to grab a local souvenir.
Cuenca is a little time caspule taking you back to a grand colonial era. Wandering the cobbled paths is a constant journey of discovery and living history, where getting a bit lost is not a bad thing.

It me be called a Panama Hat, but it originated in Cuenca. The hats were made here and then sent ship far and wide. Most hats were sold in Panama as the boats went through the canal, thus being known as a Panama Hat.
