MEET THE FORWARD TRAVEL CONSULTANTS
Rose is a traveller.
Travel and exploration are in her blood – it is ingrained in who she is as a person.
She has hitchhiked across Africa, enjoyed fermented camel milk with nomads in Mongolia, been swimming with manta rays in The Maldives and been hosted like a princess at a cricket test in India.
There is not a continent Rose has not visited several times over, with more than 60 countries under her belt in her 30+ years of travelling.
“Like the quote says, if you don’t travel you’ve only read one page of the book. To think that we are all existing at the same time. It’s phenomenal to see places you’ve always dreamed of. To just go somewhere and be blown away. Travel gives you a fantastic perspective on your place in the world – how small you can be and how amazing all these places can be.”
She believes it is her duty to help people travel better. If there is one thing that breaks her heart it is when people spend all of their hard-earned money to go somewhere and don’t have the time of their life. That’s why when Rose starts working with her clients, she begins with a conversation to truly understand their hopes and dreams for their journey. She wants her clients to be front and centre of their holiday, from the very beginning until the very end.
“I’m just an avid traveller who likes adventure and sharing his experiences with people. It’s pretty simple really.”
As a kid, David dreamed of escaping his farming community in south-east Ireland. He watched documentaries on travel and nature. Adventurer Alby Mangels was his hero.
As soon as he was old enough, he packed his bags and came to Australia on a 12 month backpacking visa.
Aside from his travels around the world, he’s been here ever since… after falling in love with the country.
David loves the travel industry, a career he chose because it allowed him to share his passion for travel with other people.
“I have a passion for travel and I love what I do. It’s exciting to get involved in people’s trips. Most people travel for happiness and pleasure and it’s great to be part of that. It’s all leisure and fun and bucket lists, which is exciting.”
From the sunny shores of Oahu Hawaii, Shannon is a consultant with the Forward Travel team, helping clients make their dreams a reality. Shannon originally started her career as a pastry chef; it was what she always wanted to be when she was a kid.
Then a friend introduced her to the travel industry and for the last 20+ years she has worked as a travel consultant, joining Forward Travel in 2016.
“When I was working in hospitality, I did lots of travel and loved it – it is addictive. It is such a great reward when they come home and say that they love what I did. Every client is a pleasure to deal with, so it is a really challenging and rewarding experience.”
How did she end up in Hawaii? She married a US Marine stationed in Oahu. They fell in love with the place so decided to stay when he retired. Shannon works flexibly to accommodate her interest in outrigger paddling but for the clients the experience is exactly the same as working with Rose or David… the only difference is that you might hear the sound of the ocean lapping on the shores if you are speaking with Shannon on the phone.
Shannon’s most memorable trip was one she took with Rose and a group of other friends from the travel industry. They started in Sri Lanka and ended up sailing the Maldives – an experience she recalls as brilliant.
And of course, if Hawaii is on your bucket list, who better to plan it than a local? But from her beachside home, Shannon can bring you the world. She recalls helping one memorable client with a 12-week bucket list trip.
“The planning took months of back and forth. It ended up that on the Antarctic leg of their trip there was bad weather so they were stuck in Antarctica and couldn’t fly home as planned. We rearranged their flights and accommodation and checked in with them every 24 hours to reassess plans. Unfortunately, we can’t control the weather but we can make the best of any situation.”
